Free Pattern: Dragon

This is a pattern inspired by the movie How To Train Your Dragon! If you'd like this pattern with more detailed pictures, you can find it on my Etsy page for a small fee! Please tag me in all finished products, so I can see the completed projects.

Materials:

Red Heart Super Saver Yarn -

White (2 skeins)

Black (1 skein)

Turquoise (1 skein)

Grey Heather (1 skein)

Stitch Marker

Crochet Hook, size G or 6

Stuffing or Polyfill

Yarn Needle


Stitches:

SC = Single Crochet

HDC = Half Double Crochet

DC = Double Crochet

TR = Triple Crochet

SL ST = slip stitch

SC2TOG = Single Crochet two stitches together

CH = Chain

SC in back loop

Whip Stitch


Notes:

  • Most parts of this pattern are worked in the round or continuous, so after each row, place the stitch marker in the last stitch made. You know you will complete a row when you make it to the stitch marker.

  • The asterisks (*) mean to repeat between the asterisks for the number of times stated. If it doesn't state how many times to repeat, repeat until the end of the row. For example, *2SC in same stitch* repeat [12], means that you will make two single crochets in the same stitch until you get 12 stitches in total and/or reach the stitch marker.

  • If you use a different size needle, it will change the gauge and size of the final product.

  • You can use different yarn, and yarn colors, but the type of yarn may change the size of the end product.

Stuff Body


Front Legs (make 2):

Using the white yarn.

CH 2

1: In 2nd CH from hook, SC 6 [6]

2: *2SC in same stitch* repeat [12]

3: *SC, 2SC in same stitch* repeat [18]

4: SC in back loop [18]

5 - 20: SC around [18]

Stuff arms.

Pinch the last stitch of the arm closed, to seal the arm. SC across the top stitches to close the arm.

SL ST into the last stitch, leave a long tail for sewing.


Back Legs (make 2):

Using the white yarn.

CH 2

1: In 2nd CH from hook, SC 6 [6]

2: *2SC in same stitch* repeat [12]

3: *SC, 2SC in same stitch* repeat [18]

4: *2 SC, 2SC in same stitch* repeat [24]

5: SC in back loops [24]

6 - 7: SC around [24]

8: *2 SC, SC2TOG* repeat [18]

9 - 12: SC all around [18]

Stuff legs

Pinch the last stitch of the leg closed, to seal the leg. SC across the top stitches to close the leg.

SL ST into the last stitch, leave a long tail for sewing.

Tail Pieces (make 3):

Using the white yarn.

1: CH 8

2: In 3rd CH from hook triple crochet, triple crochet in next stitch, half double crochet next stitch, half double crochet next stitch, SL stitch in next stitch, SL stitch in next stitch, CH 1 and turn. [6]

3: SC across 6 stitches [6]

Fasten off with a slip stitch and leave a tail for sewing.



Attaching the tail pieces to the tail:

Attach the “big side” of the tail pieces, to the seam that was created on the tail, by using the back loop stitch. Whip stitch across the chain stitch on the tail piece, to attach the tail piece. Attach the remaining pieces across the end of the tail, spreading each piece out evenly.


Big Head Piece (make 2):

Using the white yarn.

CH 2

1: In 2nd CH from hook, SC 6 [6]

2: *2SC in same stitch* repeat [12]

3-6: SC around [12]

Fasten off with a slip stitch and leave a tail for sewing.


Small Head Piece (make 2):

Using the white yarn.

CH 2

1: In 2nd CH from hook, SC 8 [8]

2-3: SC around [8]

Fasten off with a slip stitch and leave a tail for sewing.


Wings (make 2):

Using the white yarn.

1: CH 15 [15]

2: SC in 2nd chain from hook, SC across 13 stitches, CH 1 and turn [14]

3: SC across 12 stitches, SC2TOG last two stitches, CH 1 and turn [13]

4: SC2TOG, SC across 11 stitches, CH 1 and turn [12]

5: SC across 10 stitches, SC2TOG last two stitches, CH 1 and turn [11]

6: SC2TOG, SC across 9 stitches, CH 1 and turn [10]

7: SC across 8 stitches, SC2TOG last two stitches, CH 1 and turn [9]

8: SC2TOG, SC across 7 stitches, CH 1 and turn [8]

9: SC across 6 stitches, SC2TOG last two stitches, CH 1 and turn [7]

10: SC2TOG, SC across 5 stitches, CH 1 and turn [6]

SC around the edges of the wing, to make a clean edge. When going around the corners, 3SC in the corner stitch.

Fasten off with a slip stitch and leave a tail for sewing.


Eyes (Make 2):

Using the blue yarn.

CH 2

1: In 2nd CH from hook, SC 6 [6]

2: 2SC in the next two stitches; 2DC in next two stitches; 2SC in the next two stitches [12]

3: *SC, 2SC in the next stitch* repeat once from *; *DC, 2DC in the next stitch* repeat once from *; *SC, 2SC in the next stitch* repeat once from * [18]

Fasten off with a slip stitch and leave a tail for sewing.


Black Eye Insert (Make 2):

Using the black yarn.

CH 2

1: In 2nd CH from hook, SC 6 [6]

2: 2SC in the next two stitches, 2DC in the next two stitches, 2SC in the next two stitches [12]

Fasten off with a slip stitch and leave a tail for sewing.


Toes on the Legs (x4):

Using the grey yarn.

Attach the yarn to the back loop stitch on the leg.

1: *CH 3, SC stitch into next two stitches* repeat twice. CH 3, then SL stitch in the same stitch as last toe to fasten off. Leave a long tail to pull through the leg, to secure toes on.

Repeat the toes on each leg.


Assembly:

Attach all parts using the whip stitch

  • Attach the head to the body, using the last row on each piece to stitch together.

  • Legs:

    • Attach the back legs on row 7 of the body.

    • Attach the front legs between row 23 and 24 on the body.

  • Tail: Attach the tail between row 6 and 12 of the body, making sure it’s placed evenly between the back legs.

  • Wings: Attach on row 24 of the body. Only attach half of the wing, so they feel secure.

  • Eyes:

    • Place the Black eye piece on top of the blue eye piece, so there is some blue showing. Sew the pieces together.

    • Using a piece of white yarn, you can make the “eye mark” on the top of the eye, as shown in the picture.

    • Attach the eyes between row 9 and 15, 4 stitches apart from each other.

  • Big Head Pieces: Attach the big head pieces between row 3 and 7.

  • Small Head Pieces: Attach between row 10 and 13.

  • Using black yarn, cut a long piece and sew on the nostrils and mouth.
